Products / Completed Operations — $5M
What this clause says
Products and Completed Operations coverage with a limit of not less than $5,000,000 per occurrence and in the aggregate, which may be satisfied by a combination of primary and excess/umbrella policies.
What this means in plain English
Coverage for bodily injury or property damage caused by your finished product after it leaves your facility. The $5M limit is the most common contract manufacturer requirement.
What it means for a CDMO program
This is your single most important coverage. Most CDMOs satisfy this with $1M primary + $4M umbrella. Verify the umbrella actually drops down for products — some umbrellas exclude products if the underlying CGL has a manufacturing exclusion or restrictive products endorsement. Also verify products/completed ops aggregate is separate from general aggregate.
Carrier notes
The dedicated life-sciences markets are comfortable at $5M. Going to $10M typically requires excess from a second carrier or a London-market layer.
How this evaluates
The Decoder applies these rules in order; the first match wins.
- products › total limit is at least $5M → Compliant: Total products limit meets $5M.
- products › total limit is at least $2M → Borderline: Products limit is below $5M but above $2M — likely needs an umbrella increase.
- products › total limit is not set → Gap: No products liability limit indicated — this is the highest-risk gap.
